Where are you moving?

Tell me where from, where to and how big your home is. I'll show what it usually costs and help you get it quoted.

You're talking with an AI assistant. It answers from federal filings and never rates a company.

Long-distance and interstate movers, from the federal register

Every company that moves household goods across a state line for money must be registered with the FMCSA, and that registration is public. We hold the record for all 53,849 companies that have held that authority, and refresh it daily. No ratings, and nobody can pay to be listed higher.

What it costs to move between states

The most common moves between states, from the U.S. Census Bureau's 2024 American Community Survey, with the usual cost of a 2-bedroom move between the main cities, mid-month outside summer.

How to check a mover is licensed

Ask for the USDOT number and look up the federal record. It shows whether operating authority is active, whether the company is a carrier or a broker, and whether cargo insurance is on file.

  1. 1

    Get the USDOT number

It should appear on the estimate, on the company's website, and painted on the side of the truck.

  2. 2

    Check the authority is active

Registration and authority are different things: a company can hold a USDOT number without being authorised to move anything.

  3. 3

    Carrier or broker?

This decides who is responsible for your belongings and who is holding your deposit.

  4. 4

    Is cargo insurance on file?

This is the coverage that applies to your things. Liability coverage is a separate filing.
