- Operating authority
- Federal permission to move goods across a state line for money. Without it, a company cannot legally perform an interstate household goods move.
- Cargo insurance
- The policy that covers loss or damage to a customer's belongings while the carrier has them. Required of household goods carriers, not of brokers.
- Public liability (BIPD)
- Bodily injury and property damage coverage. It pays for harm the company causes to other people and their property — a vehicle it hits, a wall it drives into. It does not cover the shipment.
