US interstate movers in 2026: what the federal register shows
Every company licensed to move household goods between US states files with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. We read those filings every day. This is what they add up to, from filings retrieved 9 Oct 2026. It counts what companies filed. It does not rate any of them.

Cargo insurance
Cargo insurance is the coverage that applies to a customer's belongings. Of the 7,772 active carriers whose filings say it is required, 6,159 have it on file and 1,613 (21%) do not. Another 569 are not required to file it. 279 active carriers have a revocation of their authority pending.
A missing filing is what the record shows, not a finding about any company: a filing can lag a policy, and most statuses here date from 14 May 2026 (see below). Check a specific company's record before relying on it.
How current this is
FMCSA stopped updating its legacy authority file on 14 May 2026 and moved registrations to a new system, MOTUS, which so far holds only companies that have filed since. 3,287 companies take their authority and insurance status from MOTUS, updated 9 Oct 2026; the other 50,515 still show the legacy file's status. Addresses, fleets and registration dates come from FMCSA's census, read 9 Oct 2026. This is a snapshot: trends in licences granted and lost will follow once enough daily records have built up on the new register.
Method
- Companies are every entity with a household goods filing in FMCSA's authority records: 53,802.
- Active carriers hold active common or contract authority to carry household goods (alone or together with broker authority).
